multi-tasking

October 21, 2009

my mom has just made a *formal* complaint – that the blog doesn’t have ANY recipes in portuguese. so, to make it easier for the mothership and all of the brazilian friends who aren’t that keen in reading everything in english, i’m gonna make the effort of trying to post my recipes in THREE languages. phew. like i said, i’ll TRY. sometimes i’ll just post in one and the title in three. if you like the title but it isn’t in the language you understand the most, i’ll try my best to help you out. just give me a shout at the comments box and i’ll answer you the best way i can.

*******

my friend jessica is a very good and soon-to-be world renowed chef (trust me, you’ll hear a lot from ms. graham…). and i feel (very) embarassed of posting food stuff here when i have a CHEF friend who also has a blog. hers, of course, is solely based on food, and she made a post just for me! :)

i feel really flattered – i’m very sweet toothed and my husband is at least three times worse. and desserts are REALLY hard to make; well, apart from brigadeiro and some other type of ”just throw everything into the pan and cook” food. she says it’s because you probably have to major in chemistry before trying to make any dish… since i flunked in chemistry in high school (actually i was caught cheating when i wasn’t actually cheating, i was covering for a friend who, yes, was cheating – and really bad at it, i might add – and i sucked at chemistry and would probably have flunked anyway, but that’s an entire different story, because i couldn’t end my exam cause “i was caught cheating”).

ANYWAY… chemistry isn’t one of my best, so desserts are difficult for me, okay? if you’re good at it, GOOD FOR YOU. you’ll probably die of diabetes and i’m better off at the end of the day… ha. yes, i’m jealous. and i’m bad when jealous. so what. a have a chef friend who dedicated a post on dessert just for me.

and she made the best dessert: tiramisù! i love coffee, i loooove when there’s liquor in desserts and i specially love when there’s chocolate involved! tiramisù ticks all the right boxes for me. it’s light and fluffy, it’s boozed up (so it makes everything and everyone more cheerful) and it goes well with your end-of-meal espresso because, well, it has coffee on it. and best of all, she says it’s the easiest dessert in the universe to make. well, i don’t count brigadeiro (and neither does she) cause, although being amazingly good, brigadeiro doesn’t impress anyone, people.

i can’t take the credit for this wonderful recipe and just post it here because:

  1. well, she’s my friend and i have some morals;
  2. she’s a wonderful cook and writer, so you should read her stuff and enjoy her dishes;
  3. she made the post for meeeeee! so you should go and read it anyway. :D

so, stop being a lazy ass and click here: http://thymetocrave.blogspot.com/2009/10/thyme-for-dessert.html. and no need to tell me that she’s awesome – i know. she’s my friend for a reason. :)

i’m planning on doing this recipe week – anyone in barcelona care to taste it?

here are the pics of the asian spiced pork with pak choi i made for Emma – i cooked it again, it wasn’t as great… unfortunately. i hope rafael (my invitee for that day) didn’t get pissed off as i kept saying “this wasn’t as great as the one i cooked for emma”, but the pics turned out ok, and here they are!

cooking it!

cooking it!

hubby gave me a hand on this one and took some of the pics while he was chatting away with rafael.

forks at the ready!

forks at the ready!

recipe is a bit below – or if you wanna jump right into it, it’s here: http://caughtmyeyes.wordpress.com/2009/09/27/sunday-roast. hope you enjoy it!

everyone loves risotto – and i guess most of those people aren’t that fond on the calories that come as a side to the risotto. so, one day i was at home and had some carrots, mushrooms and leeks that were about to go “to the other side”. somehow i decided to try and make a risotto with them. bad thing that i didn’t have arborio rice (the type of rice needed to make the original risotto) – and good thing i had some regular brown rice!
smokin'!

smokin'!

i didn’t want to use butter and i didn’t have enough parmesan cheese to put into the risotto but i still wanted to add some stickyness and flavour to the rice. don’t ask me how those things come to my head, cause i don’t know, but i then decided to use a sachet of miso soup to add the “oomph” i wanted for my risotto. also, i joined some sliced turkey breast – those that you get finely sliced on delis as an alternative to ham or whatever (i LOVE them, they’re not an alternative for me!). the turkey gives the dish a very smokey flavour that is absolutely gorgeous!

crazy as this may sound, TRUST ME, the ingredients for this “fake” risotto will make you a very nice dish for two somewhat hungry people.

Ingredients:

200 g of brown (or regular, if you don’t have brown) rice

1 large finely chopped onion

1 teaspoon of vegetable (or chicken) stock

2 tablespoons of olive oil

1 sachet of miso soup

300 g of chopped carrots

150 g of chopped leeks

200 g of fresh mushrooms

150 g of turkey breast

Preparation:

Put the olive oil into a large pan, put the onions to soften, then add the carrots. After two minutes add the leeks, and a minute after add the rice. Add the vegetable stock and some water. Stir often and check if the vegetables are cooking – and also the rice. Add the turkey breast sliced into some chunks and also add the miso soup. When the rice is half cooked, add the mushrooms. Keep stirring often and add water if needed for the rice to cook. After the water has evaporated and the rice is cooked, the risotto is ready! Serve with a bit of parmesan cheese on top.

eat up!

eat up!

Tip: you can add the vegetables you want, but always keep the stock, the miso soup and the turkey. I couldn’t find any substitute for the flavours those ingredients gave to the recipe!

Hope you enjoy it! Also, if you have your own tips, please let me know! ;)

crazy thinking

October 6, 2009

my hubby sent me an email with a very interesting article from the telegraph about the most ”pointless” research: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/science/science-news/6223831/Pointless-research-top-10-Ig-Nobel-award-winners-for-silly-science.html

kind of made me wonder: which “pointless” research some 200 years ago is now part of our lifestyle? i mean, i’m pretty sure when ben franklin was going around with a kite under a thunderstorm A LOT of people thought ”ok, crazy man… you win. now go and enter your home and stop running around screaming when it’s raining!’.

the invention – or discovery – of some many things had probably the most stupid types of curiosity behind them. for instance, i know that the few brazilian servicemen who went to fight during the second world war used newspaper between their socks and boots to keep humidity and cold far from their feet. crazy as it may sound, it was one of the first types of insulation - and servicemen from other countries began to follow the brazilians on their crazy quest for old newspaper. or the fact that penicilin was just “found” because alexander fleming left his samples out of the fridge…

i get the point that the UK need some specific type of research and the government is willing to pay for researchers to investigate those specific things. but i think the main force that drives discoveries that revolutionize the way we live are the ones that begin with a very dubious idea – or, at least, some sort of crazy action!

triste…

October 2, 2009

e a farra continua, companheiros

e a farra continua, companheiros

which is the odd one out?

which is the odd one out?

worldwide shopping

September 29, 2009

my friend erica recently had a baby in brazil - the lovely dante! she lived in london for a couple of years and, unfortunately, she misses the imense supply of baby products that was constantly on offer there. not that brazilian babies walk around naked and sleep in cardboard boxes (no, we do not live in trees! :D), but there is an absurd lack of diversity in products -and not just for babies.

i think this is due to a combination of extremely high import taxes with even more extreme margins from sellers and a biased view from the public that they should pay a premium for “imported” products (ok, when they come from china or india, there’s actually a devaluation of the product!).

words cannot describe my feelings towards the lack of supply for so many things in brazil. i think that we, as 190 million people, deserve a bit more. but i won’t bother you with my feelings of rage towards the government and some brazilian companies. i came here to share my knowledge about…….. (cue trumpets!) WORLDWIDE DELIVERY SHOPPING SITES!

unfortunately there aren’t many clothing sites that deliver internationally. most of them refrain from doing that mainly because of logistics purposes and problems with returns. since most of the european countries and the U.S. have laws that protect customers (yet some more complaining about brazil), people can buy through the internet and return their goods within 14 to 28 days of arrival to get their money back. that way, if they deliver worldwide and retain their policy, they might have their products “retained” in the hands of a customer for over two months – considering delivery and sending back time – and it is likely they won’t be able to sell it again.

even so, there are some very good websites that deliver around europe and worldwide too! i’ll list them below together with their main business:

Beauty sites:

  • HQ hairhttp://www.hqhair.com: beauty website that sells make-up, hair products, perfume, accessories such as hair dryers, hair straighteners, jewelry, brushes and many other things! worldwide delivery
  • LoveLula- http://www.lovelula.com: although i would NEVER EVER recommend ANYONE to love our president, love lula is an organic beauty website that delivers worldwide. they sell make-up, bath & body, fragrances, hair products, porducts just for men, pregnant women and babies.
  • FeelUniquehttp://www.feelunique.com: another beauty website that sells pretty much anything related to beauty - they even sell underwear! their brand catalogue is quite big.
  • GlowGirlhttp://www.glowgirl.co.uk: also offers international delivery but you have to spend a minimum of 49.95 pounds to qualify. if you’re a big spender, this one has the biggest supply of Bare Minerals i’ve seen! :)

Clothing sites:

  • ASOShttp://www.asos.com: once this was a shop which only sold “as seen on screen” (ie. clothes seen in celebrities) clothing and hence the name for the website. now it is a gigantic portal for several big brands (including alexander mcqueen, cacharel, calvin klein, D&G, DKNY, diesel, emporio armani and oh so many others). they also have big high street names such as GAP, oasis, french connection, mango, among others. they sell womenswear, menswear, childrenswear and also sell loads of beauty products. beware of asos – once you enter the website it’s IMPOSSIBLE to leave empty handed! oh, and they often send to former buyers some nice discount codes!
  • FashionStoreHQhttp://www.fashionstorehq.com: they don’t have a lot, but they are very clever. they ship your parcels as “gift”, so your chances of paying custom charges are minimal. worth navigating just because of  this. :)
  • AlexAndAlexahttp://www.alexandalexa.com: for the stylish babies, toddlers and kids. this is *the* website for luxury label clothing for children – there are some very affordable items, but expect to gasp at some price tags.
  • TravelSmith - http://www.travelsmith.com: they say it’s a “travel apparel” website – and indeed they sell travel apparel – but they also sell clothes for men and women who like to dress casually and confortably but yet stylishly.
  • Amoraliahttp://www.amoralia.com: amoralia sells ONLY maternity underwear. perfect for brazilians who don’t know where to find this, since there isn’t any around there…
  • BambinoMiohttp://www.bambinomio.com: they sell products for babies such as cotton nappies and nappy covers, hypo allergenic and non biological washing powder, laundry bags, among many other stuff.
  • Net-a-Porterhttp://www.netaporter.com: fashion heaven!!! they sell pretty much all luxury labels – think of Harvey Nichols/Bergdordf’s on your doorstep. love them oh so much! shame i don’t have the money to get ALL of their stuff!! just for the ladies – sorry, boys.

Another interesting sites:

  • AdventureShophttp://www.adventureshop.co.uk: they sell pretty much everything for sports – any sport! apparel, gear, clothing, gadgets, you name it, it’s there.
  • 118Golf - http://www.118golf.co.uk: this one is probably only for my doctor, Dr. Maracajá. golf supplies and clothing from the best brands. i want a discount for procedures now! :D
  • TheBookDepositoryhttp://www.bookdepository.co.uk: i’ve bought tons of books from this website and they never failed me. and, most of all, i’ve received them super-fast (spanish post SUCKS! sorry spaniards).

PHEW! guys, i’m VERY tired after pulling out all of those sites. if you need some info on any particular item(s) you want, just comment on this and i’ll try my best to answer your queries! and i hope you all enjoy those i’ve placed here – i’m sure you already have a good selection “to play” for days! :)

sunday roast

September 27, 2009

food is always a good subject – especially on a sunday. yesterday my friend emma came along so we could watch some x factor (if you’ve never heard/seen it, click here: http://www.youtube.com/user/thexfactoruk?blend=1&ob=4 and enjoy!) and i made some “carol’s version of asian food”. i didn’t follow any recipe, i just remembered watching this old jamie oliver programme in which he did something thai-based with pak choi and mushrooms. so, with that in mind – and some weird craving for chillies and garlic – i decided to cook spiced pork with pak choi, mushrooms and leeks. oh, side order of delicious sticky jasmin rice.

i didn’t take any pics because i didn’t know it was gonna be SOOOOOOOOOO good! i loved it! it was one of those very successful kitchen moments that won’t repeat itself anytime soon. shame. but i’ll share the recipe with you and later on i’ll post the pics (when i make it again) and will reference it back to this one.

pak choi - i'll try to find some brazilian translation

pak choi - i'll try to find some brazilian translation

Ingredients:

diced (around 1cm³) filet of pork

pak choi (asian leaves, pic below)

fresh mushrooms (any you like – i used cup, shiitake and shimeji)

leeks

jasmin sticky rice

chilli paste

garlic

coriander

chives (spring onions work best though)

chinese five spice

lime juice

salt

sesame seed oil

Preparation:

Make a marinade for the pork with the chinese five spice, lime juice, salt, garlic and chilli paste. Leave the pork in the marinade for at least 30 minutes.

While waiting, prepare the jasmin sticky rice. Unlike long grain, jasmin sticky rice doesn’t need to be previously washed. Just put it in a pan with a bit of salt and boiling water and let it cook.

Throw some sesame seed oil in a hot wok and let it heat up. Toss the pork with the marinade in it, let it cook for some 3 minutes, then throw the mushrooms and the leek. Let it cook for another 3 to 5 minutes (or until the mushrooms look cooked).

At this moment, check the seasoning – if it needs more salt, chilli paste, lime juice, some vegetable stock (didn’t put it on the recipe because i didn’t use it, but you can to enhance flavours if you want). Add more of what you want and then add the pak choi.

I normally don’t chop the pak choi – i like their shape and a bit of crunchiness, so for me it’s good this way. If you can, you can chop it into smaller pieces.

Also add the coriander and the spring onions/chives and let them soften a bit. After that, it’s ready to serve!

Hope you enjoy it! :)

**********

sugar high

September 25, 2009

i’m obsessed with cupackes lately. everytime i have a craving, i don’t even have to think about what that craving might be. i want a yummy piece of cakey heaven on my lips. preferentially with a nice, creamy topping. this happened because my friend emma sent me a message about a cupcake/tea house near my house. i went there and, to my surprise, that place is all i ever wanted to exist here (oh well… yes, there is the matter of M&S simply food. but let’s forget about that at this moment. give me a hand here – i’m happy).

delish! delish!

it’s a wi-fi enabled haven, with lots of dark colours in the walls and mood lighting, serving mainly tea and cupcakes. they have a shop in the front, so you can try to make your own little cakes at home.  as long as i live here, this place will never run out of business.

mood lighting, wi-fi, tea and cake - now, winter and rain, please.

for those who live, are stopping by or are in the search for a perfect cupcake and tea, look out for The Fabulous Cupcake Co. - Carrer del Bisbe Sivilla, 48 – Barcelona – c.p. 08023. They have a website (currently in construction) with some more info about the place. Hope you enjoy it! And if you see me around, drop me a hello! :)

antonio pitanga: law abiding citizen with a twist

antonio pitanga: law abiding citizen with a twist

cansei. isso me irrita DEMAIS pra continuar. :)
